yeah sure is smart to go the way that you have zero idea how to do anything and will most likely end up loving up multiple times!

Again, I'd rather go a route I'm familiar with and know I won't forget up rather than going the complete opposite lol
i tried to install arch linux 5 times in virtualbox before i could do it right each successive time
set up virtualbox and install the os of whatever choice into it several times so you get a feel for what you're doing
iirc the ubuntu installer is similar if not just like the windows installer, point and click

PLUS you get the forgetin knowledge of knowing how to use linux so if you somehow break your outdated unsupported windows 95 install you can always fall back on something free

I have complete zero knowledge of linux or any style of script language

read a book

no joke we still have the original box for windows 95 sitting around with the installation disc in it
why

if I do decide to go Linux, how good would Elementary os / Fedora / Arch Linux perform? I'd like to have a linux distro that looks visibly pleasing and smooth

You get an external reader: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208939
I need an internal SD card reader
I dont like having 20 million USB thingies. Isnt there a PCI solution or something?
Well I can always buy this if there isnt, thanks tough.

I know what kind of device you're talking about, but the only ones I've found only takes full-size SD cards and connect via IDE which hasn't been on motherboards for the last five years. None that use SATA or USB though, sorry.

Oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

just go USB, there are no external solutions other than that due to your case
