it's not recommended to run a 24-pin board with a 20-pin connector but you can

Also, this may seem like a stupid question, but will I have to re-install windows if I get a new motherboard?

I think it might be hard if you have the OEM version, I've heard that it binds itself to the motherboard.

I've also heard that you can replace the mobo with one of the same brand and it doesn't matter, but I don't know how true that is.

I've even heard that there is a way to work around it and reactivate. I'm really not sure as to what is true and what is misinformation, but you should Google around a bit.

Based on what I read when I was looking around before deciding on Win8 or Win7 OEM it has to be the exact same model of motherboard

Actually, I think it does work.  My PSU does two extra pins to the side (branching from the 6 pins) on each PCIe power cable.

He was probably confused by the space in-between the two connectors, every card I've seen that needs two connectors has them right next to each-other.

On a related subject, I need a bit of help.
My new graphics card has scrolling horizontal bar shadow issues, I've ruled out it being a problem with the card since it only happens in certain applications, it's perfectly fine in most and there's no troubles when I'm just looking at my desktop, browsing the internet or watching videos so I just need some more help figuring out if its the cable from my monitor, the VGA-DVI adapter or the drivers for the HD 7870.

Anyone have any personal experience with such a problem and managed to fix it?

Yeah, for my new build I'm going to install windows off of a flashdrive.
