I don't get this whole thing of buying headphones over speakers.
After using a good set of Sennheiser headphones as well as a good set of Plantronics for several years I can honestly say that my £25 set of Logitech speakers with sub-woofer are infinitely superior
Headphones don't have to produce the same kind of volume as speakers, and can thus spend more money on accuracy. Because of the (partially) closed nature of headphones, they don't leak much sound in or out, making them ideal for listening in places with lots of background noise.
In terms of gaming, it is often easier to buy a headphone with surround capability, than buying a full 5.1 / 7.1 speaker system. The ideal placement of the speakers can be hard to find. And you're paying the same for 7 lesser speakers than for 2 better (headphone) speakers. So the price/performance ratio of headphones is better.
The choice can be somewhat simplified like this:
- Do you like high quality audio? Do you care about accurate audio with lots of details? Do you listen to music in a noisy area? = Buy a decent set of headphones
- Do you like to blast your music at full volume? Do you like to have your walls shaking from the bass? Do you like having your neighbours / the police knocking on your door? = Buy a set of large speakers and a sub.
I seriously doubt that last statement. Either you got a quality speaker set for cheap (Z623, current price in Norway: $200), or you had bad/broken headphones.
