Is building generally cheaper than buying a pre-built one?

It is and you install it yourself so you have the security that there's no extra bullstuff in your system.

Is building generally cheaper than buying a pre-built one?

Yes, and if you can build with legos you can build a computer.

ok cool. What about part selection? How do I know I'm getting the best for my money. I'd also like it to come out around $500 or less

Yes. Every time.

You could always ask on the forums. I posted a build last year and Nal patched it up a bit.

All I want is a desktop that:

1. Won't overheat when I play games
2. Is cheap (under $500)
3. Is reliable
4. Functions like a regular desktop (Word, Internet, etc.)
5. Has capability of good game graphics
6. Preferably quiet

The overheating has many factors. Mainly, your ambient room temperature and the quality of your fans/radiator and how well the airflow is in your system.

I'm open to suggestions

Alright, I seriously need help now. Windows stopped responding like earlier today (Numlock won't toggle) and my screen glitched. It's pointlessly drawing lines up and down the screen. I'm using the onboard GPU as my PCI GPU is useless now.

Rebooted and now it doesn't detect my Ethernet driver. For forget's sake!

You're thinking amd64, which is 64 bit. ARM is a whole different architecture that is generally used in mobile phones and tablets because of its high efficiency, low power use, and low heat output.

A simple reinstalling of the card worked but this is plug-and-play. Should this be happening at all?

Do you have all the extra stuff like monitor, keyboard, etc?
