The biggest difficult in prebuilts for upgrades is the power supply. A lot of OEMs put the bare minimum wattage rating in for the parts you bought, with minimum power cables. I'm sure there's a system builder out there who would let you choose from a list of PSUs, but you'll pay dearly for it. There are probably a few companies on the opposite end of the spectrum that would just solder ram to your motherboard

Oh yeah, I'm having some trouble with finding a power supply that'll be good enough for the GTX 760, but I'm sure I'll be able to get a better one for the better card. GPUBoss doesn't appear to list power needs for the cards. :/

Don't use gpuboss, or any site like it (hwcompare, cpuboss, etc.)
All they do is compare on-paper specs and then give it an arbitrary rating. Comparing things like clockspeed is goddamn asinine, and I really hate those sites because of it.

For a 760, you'll probably want 500W or so. You could go lower, but they're usually the same price as the 500W psus.

How come "Upgradeability in the future" is listed as a pro for custom built computers? You can purchase new components and install them into pre-built ones, too. For example, I got a pre-build computer that came with an Nvidia GT 625, but I'm gonna replace it with an Nvidia GTX 760.
Isn't opening the PC case during warranty break the warranty in most cases for prebuilts?

Since there's more activity on the thread and I haven't bought the parts yet, how's this look to everyone:

do your research, some oems use proprietary power connectors on the motherboard and thus only the psu that comes with it works
i know acer does this

Here is the build i plan on making: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Vf288d

Any suggestions?

get a 2tb seagate card. its only a few dollars more

So my mother decided to break my computer screen on purpose (long story)

Whats cheaper, replacing the screen or getting a new laptop altogether? Its still under a 1 year acer warranty but I don't know if that covers physical damage and I already had it sent in before for a bad motherboard. I also want it either fixed or replaced as soon as possible.

Well, though I didn't include it, I was kinda planning on getting a separate 1TB HDD for recording. Might go with a 2 TB main and a 1 TB for recording.

Might also upgrade to 16GB RAM later on incase i get into video editing.

Test to see if the warranty applies, usually you fill out a form and they tell you.

Fill out a form? I had to ship it to them last time

When my computer monitor broke I looked online. There was a digital form to complete. After I completed it they sent me an email telling me I was covered.
