How to waste money and performance in the pursuit of being "cutting edge" - A brief guide

Could someone come up with a medium-gaming build that my brother could enjoy games like TF2 and those type of 12 year old games+some expandability for some of the mid-teen tier games for when he gets older?

He's paying for it, but I just want to show him that building a gaming computer is cheaper and better than waltzing inside a bestbuy and buying the coolest looking computer. He wanted the smallest and glossiest one in there "because it looked modern" and I just laughed.

also til that bestbuy workers believe the only thing that makes a computer fast (in performance and in general) is the cpu
which is the main thing but other things matter

-snip-

I'm not used to picking amd parts, so someone who is a lot more knowledgeable with them check this list

Well, Made a mid tier build. Should play 99% of older games at max and some newer games at around mid settings. TF2 can be maxed out.
If he is wanting to overclock or wanting a quieter fan, you can spend the extra 30 for a CPU cooler.

He doesn't need a SSD unless he is will to spend an extra $100

This doesn't include an OS or optical drive.

can somebody recommend me a good nvidia gpu for around $400? Im getting tired of my 1gb 570...

Ninja, that PSU in Swat's build is very underpowered for an R9 280. He needs at least a 500 watt, but with AMD parts probably closer to 600 to be safe.

I'm talking about any game I host.
Yes they are all joined the network. It worked at my old place but now at my new place we have a new router and service provider. I also don't know if my computer network settings are messed up or not.

Ah, thanks. I figured it was a bit small.

will a 3.3 ghz i3 bottleneck a 760? if it does, how bad will the bottleneck be?

Unless you're super attached to EVGA's 970, I'd fully recommend ASUS's OC card. I've been using it for what, maybe a month or two now. The thing is beautiful, both physically in the design and how it performs under load.

Also it has a back plate, which is just forgetin' fantastic.

Dont even know if you want to save money, but if you can easily get a 4690k and save $100 easily.
You can cut out half of that RAM and you'll still be fine if your only gaming and not working on videos or images, plus you'll cut out another $90+.

That would bring the price down to $1519.31 Which can either be put into either a 240mm CPU cooler instead of the 120mm or a better SSD.

There are a couple of equivalent RAM sticks that are cheaper and/or come with motherboard combos.
