The GPU switch is a good choice, but I don't see why you did that to the memory. You slashed the total memory in half and got a lower clocked version, saving a mere $15. I'd say if he wanted the 16GB to begin with, there isn't any reason to sacrifice it for such little monetary savings.

If he's putting together a GTX 960 build I can't see him needing more than 8GB of RAM and going from 2133 to 2400Mhz is not going to make any difference in most all applications. Saving those few dollars and spending it on a better wireless card is something that will have noticeable gains in both connection stability and speed. A worthy trade-off in my opinion.

Edit: Here's an alternate partslist with a solid PSU, 16GB of RAM but no aftermarket CPU cooler and a slightly cheaper wireless card. Realistically the cooler doesn't matter since it isn't a k-series processor so I think it comes more down to vanity or preference in that regard.

the only thing i would recommend changing is getting a different case that doesnt look so tacky and stuff, such as the corsair 100r
and getting an ssd, as they really just make your experience better

After 3 years since I bought new RAM on 1600MHz, I just read recently my i5 2300 only supports 1333MHz ram.
So I want to upgrade to a new CPU, and the best cheapest offer without having to change my socket (LGA 1155) is i7 2600, which is actually a pretty dope deal and perhaps the best thing I could get for this socket which is still found. The 3770 is a liable alternative, but I can't find it anywhere.
But the i7 2600 doesn't support 1600MHz either (The 3770 does support it).

Ah, thanks. I think I'll go with this - I want the better RAM for a reason - Feed the Beast is a bitch, plus I do a lot of video editing, modelling, graphic design, and such. I'd rather just never have to worry about it.

Fallout 4 devs recommend an r9 290x 4gb and an FX-9590 4.7 GHz; I'm running maxed settings very well (even with hi-res texture mods enabled) with an r9 380 4gb and an FX‑8320 3.5 GHz. I have 8 gigs of ram and I've peaked at only 88% memory capacity while playing fo4

Ok. Well, IDK, I'm just sort of on the lower end of the spectrum for other stuff, so I figured if I can afford a fairly cheap upgrade that will help some I should go for it. Perhaps I'll see how it runs with 8 GB first.
