if you want ubuntu but want better looks do elementary os, it has ubuntu's back-end but looks really nice
i can also agree that linux mint is really good

arch linux is too hard to set up to use for a few days
its for advanced linux users only
even after following 4 tutorials it still didnt work for me

Linux mint using the Cinnamon interface is the best linux experience I have had, so I would recommend that, if anything, ubuntu is nice too but I still find the side dock strange, and mint offers a more traditional desktop experience for me, though usually I use Windows if I can afford it.


If your looking for Windows , don't forget that you can usually get cheap Windows 10 keys at /r/microsoftsoftwareswap
Unless you really want to pay so much for the Windows 10 USB (I'm so glad they finally ditched using CD's)

you can even make it look like windows XP

Anyone have experience with replacing laptop screens? I'm looking into replacing mine and some suggestions on what to buy/look for would be great. 4K/UHD resolution is preferred but 1920x1080 is alright too. The screen size is 15.6".

i would not do 1920x1080 on a 13 inch screen
i had that on a 15" and it was a pain in the ass with scaling

id say 15 is the lowest id go with 1920x1080
i would prefer 1600x900 on it

Well my current screen I have in the computer is 3840x2160 and I don't have any issues with the scaling and it looks fantastic. I just hate how dark the edges of the screen get at even the slightest angle.

maybe im doing something wrong
on both ubuntu and windows its a pain in the ass on my asus TP500, especially when trying to use the touchscreen
if you think you can do it then get a 1920x1080

In future make sure what panel type your display has. TN panels have horrendous viewing angles and colour reproduction, it used to be that the alternatives had unacceptable response times/refresh rates for gaming but these days there's really no reason to not get an IPS panel. They have great viewing angles and colours with minimal compromises compared to TN panels

Ah ok thanks. I didn't really know what the cause of the dark edges on the screen was, but I assumed it had something to do with the finish(matte, glossy, etc.). I'll have to look into the different types of panels and what my laptop has because it currently just has the stock screen that came built into it.

Edit: I just did a quick search and got tons of results involving people complaining about the Lenovo Y50 having stuffty TN panels, so I guess that answers my question. I'll have to see if I can buy an IPS screen for it. Thanks for the help.
