I sat anxiously, watching as people hunched over the reports discuss their observations. Someone in the corner of the room sat attentively as they examined data from on-board flight monitors, as well as video footage of the invasion. Finally, an officer turned his head and gestured for me to come over.
"We've examined several reports concerning the Estovakian invasion of Gracemeria and before we draw any conclusions, we'd like to hear a few more details from your first hand account."
He paused for a moment to collect himself.
"Approximately an hour after the initial bombing raid, pilots claimed to have witnessed groups of very large explosions, all of which were centered in the same altitude band as most Emmerian fighters in the area. In that instant virtually half of the fighters stationed at Gracemeria were lost or damaged, with the majority of their respective pilots presumed dead. You were one such pilot caught in the explosions, correct?"
"Yes, sir."
"Tell me everything that happened in the moments before the event."
I give him the full story, taking special care to point out that I received no radar warnings before the explosions went off. After hearing what I have to say, he sighs. "Follow me." I'm led to a small video monitor off to the side. He plays a clip of some HUD footage recorded by another pilot. Despite being in black and white, I was able to make out a large, faint silhouette surrounded by dark specks.
"Early warning radar systems picked up an exceptionally large signature about 80 nautical miles east off Gracemeria's shoreline. We suspect that this aircraft is largely responsible for the incident, and we almost have a positive ID on what we're up against. However, until we clear up a few important details we can't say for sure. You can go, lieutenant. Get some rest. You've done reasonably well up until this point, but it's about to get much harder in the coming weeks."
I leave without saying a word.
