A pigeon perched on Flatflyer's head once during third grade, long before he discovered the Blockland forums. He, out of boredom, then took the bird to his house and gave the bird a home. He named the bird Vinny, because he wasn't sure of anything else to name the pigeon.
He gave Vinny shelter, food, and water, and gave him plenty of toys to play with. Vinny was happy, and so was Flatflyer. They had a good time with each other, until the day Flatflyer had to move to his current home in Canada. Even worse, Flatflyer had to leave poor Vinny behind. Vinny was saddened that the person who had took care of him and nursed him for months had to go away.
While Flatflyer's father was moving his bed out of his room, the foot of the bed bumped into Vinny's cage. The cage plummeted from the perch on where it was located, sending Vinny plummeting to the ground. A side of the cage smashed into Vinny's head, cracking his head open and killing him instantly. His father stumbled and lost grip on his bed as he saw the poor pigeon die before his eyes, and called Flatflyer over immediately. Flatflyer ran out of the living room where he waited and into his room, where he stopped cold at the sight of the corpse.
The traumatic event would scar him all the way into his teen years, while he was browsing Blockland and playing Starbound. While creating his avian character, he suddenly had a flashback of Vinny's death half a decade ago, and felt that he was going to preserve Vinny forever, as his Starbound character.
