The thing is that there's a bunch of other games where races are inspired by other things but aren't just that thing. Let's take, for example, Mass Effect which had great race design. The entire god damn Asari race aside. You look at a krogan and it's like "Yeah that's certainly a lizard" but you don't just literally summarize them as "lizard-people" because they don't just forgetin' look like lizard-people. Salarians. Those were inspired by amphibians and stuff but they're not just "frog-men." They look different. Turians, those forgets were inspired by like. Avian. Things. Or something. But they're not forgetin' bird-people. They don't look like bird-people. They're distinct enough to not be like that.
Starbound on the other hand is literally just slapping furry stuff on a humanoid body and calling it a day. Starbound's art team isn't great. It never really has been. The sprites are low-resolution and poorly animated. I could go on and on about this stuff and be a huge hypocrite because I can't animate either but seriously. Originality isn't something you'd find in this game. Not from what I've seen so far.
