I've never really understood bitcoin, I'm not sure what the program actually does that gives you bitcoins.

mining nodes on the network are awarded bitcoins each time they find the solution to a certain mathematical problem (and thereby create a new block).

Bitcoins are like any other currency (dollar, euro, whatever): they represent value.

I find Bitcoins extremely interesting. What I also find very interesting is how the value of the Bitcoin varies from market to market.
