Author Topic: So apparently I downloaded a virus  (Read 857 times)

Winzip Registry Optimizer. It was mysteriously packaged with the most recent version of uTorrent, and it slowed my PC down while doing a fake scan and stuff so I stopped the fake scan and rebooted in safe mode (with networking) and am currently running a full computer scan with Malwarebytes.
Does anyone else happen to recognize this particular virus/program? It honestly seemed a little too easy to delete it, but it apparently edits registry files too...

edit nevermind you are using it
If you're scared about it check if anything is different or use a restore

uTorrent.

That sounds as much like a disease ridden whore as any software I've heard of.

Creepy Pasta time!

OT: No, never even heard of something about that, just keep doing the scan and everything will fix itself. Except for the virus of course.

It really isn't that bad.

OP's computer disagrees with you.

From everything I read:

"Winzip Registry Optimizer is a real thing, but the criminals always hacked the program and it controlled this thing then spread malicious codes via the application. So it will be categorized as a fake antivirus program that’s just been released lately to continue to mess computers all over the world. Once being infected, there will be a window of this Registry Optimizer popping out of nowhere and start to scan through your computer especially registry errors automatically. Looking from its appearance, it’s just another antivirus software that’s trying to help you detect problems inside the system. But the fact is, it’s not a real program. It’s created by hackers who aim at collecting valuable information and money from innocent PC users! Similar to the new Security Shield Virus, it is quite dangerous isn’t it?"

Removal process is in that article as well if MalwareBytes doesn't work.

If you use vuze you will never go back

All right, Malwarebytes didn't find anything suspicious and several of the virus's key registry files it creates are absent from my computer. It appears that I am in the clear. Thank you forums!

Although it's odd that AVG wouldn't start. If that problem persists, I may have a more stealthy virus.

It's clean and a it's a bittorrent client.

if you happen to download rogues (viruses that take the form of computer security programs, etc) try using sandboxie

http://www.sandboxie.com/

how would using sandboxie help with cleaning up a virus

My computer disagrees with OP.

Well, it's not on my computer in any recognizable form. Apparently, despite slowing my computer to a crawl while inspecting an obscene number of registry errors, it didn't actually cause any lasting harm. All virus protection systems are functional and not blocked (apparently AVG just doesn't like Safe Mode). I am PROBABLY in the clear.
