Author Topic: let's talk about Donations  (Read 4815 times)

yeah, anything that directly effects gameplay is way out of line

though that said, i don't really see an issue with a donator room as long as it was only accessible during down time (as in, not during there's actual gameplay going on)

'slight benefits in any gamemode' is massively wrong, holy stuff. in an equal fight between a donator and a non-donator, the donator has the edge for a reason the non-donator cannot necessarily match (and is super forgeted-up to force upon him)

hats're cool, though. i guess you can't really go wrong with hats.

special hats, i mean. non-donators get stuffty, not-special hats.

completely agree, this was more of just a mock up, this would not be included, originally I was going to host something with a levelling system, and by donating you would get like an xp boost, rather than having to rank up normally, but now this is not going to even be included

Vip Room
vip room if accessible during normal gameplay will remove you from any teams and you will no be able to re-enter gameplay, and if you die rather than spectate you can spectate from the vip room

yes, I made a new hat system with unusual hats

bottom line is that this was mostly a mock up and I completely agree that p2w benefits are horrible

that's actually really rad

So Rub and I have actually been putting this together as a feature for RTB Hosting. The idea is that you can donate to a server you like in a way that assures your money is going directly to helping cover the cost of running the server (which is something a few people have raised as concerns when donating in this thread).

The general plan is that server hosters will get a button they can put in their thread or link to from their servers which will allow the user to enter an amount and optionally their BL ID (it could be left empty if they wish to donate anonymously). Money would then be applied to the account in the form of credit which would count towards (or cover) the next payment made by the owner of the server.

We'd be presenting donor information via the web interface, via the in-game hosting mod and also as a notification via email so that the information could be easily used by add-ons to identify whether a player has donated to the server as well as how much they've given.

That is really awesome. Can there be a way of logging people who donate and some kinda safe way of implementing features only for donors like hats or skins?

well it would be a good way for members of a clan to contribute properly.

though, i find benefits of donating for any other reason slim to none. maybe that crappy tdm can start me off with 50 kills up front or something.

Ephi and I talked about exposing the list of donators via a method in the RTB server hosting addon, then you can programatically give donators privileges or whatever.

Yep as mentioned in my post, the in-game rtb hosting mod would allow you to just do %client.isRTBHostingDonor() and %client.getRTBHostingDonationAmount() (or something along those lines) so whatever add-ons you run on your server can take whatever action you want for donors.

Excellent. Can't wait!

That would definitely be something that would sway me more towards donating to a server host.

You can't guarantee that the person you donate to will still want to host after you've donated, I suppose.
But it atleast guarantees that all they can do with the donations is use it to host more. Which is a much heavier load off of my mind if I donate.
I would be annoyed if I donated and the server shut down, but I'd be even more annoyed if I donated and that person shut down and solely used their donation money for buying themselves Steam Games or something.

That's a pretty good point.

It would also be quite useful for those server hosts who occasionally hold big (sometimes annual) Events.
Like Building competitions (money could even go towards prizes), Holiday events, Build/Clan Expos and other such stuff.

What happens to the money if someone receives more donations via RTB than is ever used to cover hosting costs? Does it get refunded or does the host / RTB just keep it? Like if donators pay to keep a server up for two months but the host ends up only hosting for one month?

They are helping to pay for the server and access to it, its up to the host if hes going to use the server for the time its been payed for.

Here's a suggestion: stop making RTB-exclusive features.

It doesn't have to be rtb exclusive if you make one to :)

Ephialtes has since stopped most development of the free part of RTB. It's really disappointing to see his priorities in exclusiveness.
