Craig Venter’s Voyage Summary

Years ago, J. Craig Venter was in the race with the government to find the human genome. After he succeeded, he disappeared to French Polynesia to collect the DNA of everything on the planet. He is basically trying to sequence the genome of Mother Earth. His hope was to discover tens or even hundreds of millions of new genes. This was one of his many goals, including creating life from scratch. After a long time away, Venter resurfaced in the news after conducting a study of microbial diversity in Sargasso Sea near Bermuda . Instead of an expected ocean desert, Venter found an abundant and varied soup of microbes wherever he sampled the seawater. And, he even found 1,800 new species and 1.2 million new genes. He was reaching his goal at a very rapid rate. Venter was planning an expedition of men to travel around the world on his yacht to discover more of the species he desired. Venter brought a vast amount of sophisticated equipment on his voyage. Along with his countless, he had technology (that Darwin lacked) to help him discover new species. During Venter’s trip, his plan was to smash all of the genes he found into small pieces. Then, he could piece them back together to make a full genome for the species. This is the same technique he used when he found the human genome. Additionally, Venter took many samples in different locations along the way. He recorded where he found them to see the different genes that come from different places. Some of the best samplings came from the famous Galapagos Islands , one of the prime locations from the voyage. While Venter might have promised not to patent the raw microbes he found, the environmentalists' argument went, he or someone else could genetically modify them, then claim patents on the engineered life-forms. Although they ran into some technical difficulties over the trip (including problems with the boat), they managed to make it through. As the expedition went on, more and more people heard about it and new volunteers wanted to join. One of those was a French officer. Overall, Venter says that the goal of the expedition “is to create the mother of all gene databases." But, Shreeve posed an interesting question, “[Banks] didn't question the meaning of what he was collecting, the way Darwin did. Are we in an era now when just accumulating data is enough, or is there a question you're trying to answer, an assumption you're trying to test?” Venter’s response was that there are millions of questions to be answered on this expedition. Basically, they were wondering if Venter’s expedition was more like Banks’ or Darwin’s. But, he is more like a mixture of both. Many people even ask if Venter is the next Darwin . At the end of the trip, Shreeve asks Venter if what he has is considered alive. Then, Venter replies that it is just a genome, but he will eventually put it into cellular context. He decided to go public with his findings and future plans by the end of that year. In conclusion, there are six steps to hunting microbes: sampling, shotgunning, tagging, sequencing, assembling and classifying, and annotating.
