Actually, it is. Cats run to the prey, jump on them and hold on with their claws. As they hold on, they bite the neck of the prey until it dies. Unless a saber-toothed cat had a mouth opening of 180°, they wouldn't been able to hunt for stuff.

well they did go extinct but that was probably because of big prey animals dying out first
