wtf why is it 3ds only
Probably because the wii u has some unique gamemode going on that hasn't been talked about yet. Would also explain the winter release date.
Also the 3ds version has full online same as the wii u, runs at 60fps even in 3d and comes out this summer. To keep the framerate at 60 some assist trophies and Pokemon will move at 30 fps as appossed to 60, but the fighters will remain the same. Both versions have the same roster of characters.
The only things that seperate the 3ds and wii u versions are the stages, the 3ds version having smash run and the 3ds version having outlines on characters so they are easier to see on the small screen.
Additionally the release dates, but I already mensioned those.

The 3ds is selling better than the wii u. It's also easier to develop for. Nintendos plan seems to be to get the lesser version of the game out first, to entice people to want to buy a wii u for Christmas with the better version of the game. Also the two versions will communicate somehow, according to mr sakurai, but nothing's been shown yet.
