I disagree with OP, but not for the reason you might think. Now, I know that most people are saying that terrains and interiors helped get rid of the brick and lag limitations of the game. Now this in entirely true; in fact it really allowed a huge variety of amazing maps that I really wish could've stayed in the new update.
But there's a major problem with them, and that's that in reality, they aren't that great. First of all, they looked TERRIBLE. And you cannot deny this. The textures were horrifically low quality, and just in general they didn't look good unless you had a master map maker create it.
Second, they didn't have a whole ton of purpose; in fact I'd say the only reason they were used so much is that other people were using them and that it was easier to use someone else's creativity in the form of a map to fuel your own. You can still do this, just find other sources.
Third, they were buggy as hell. Remember the bloody slopes glitch where the snow turned red? That's only one example. The code for maps was also apparently horrific. And while it may not have been noticeable to the average player, it legitimately did slow down the game.
Fourth, it impeded more features from being made. This is the main reason why they were removed. The code was horribly messy and buggy and hard to manage, and all new features had to go through this monolithic hellhole of a system. It was better to just remove them altogether to make it easier on baddy.
So yes, the slopes were fun as hell, the bedroom was a classic and always will be, and the GSF maps were breathtaking, but in the end the bads outweighed the goods and they were removed.
Now, that doesn't mean they're never coming back. It's entirely possible they will. Will it be any time soon? I'd be willing to bet money it won't be. The system would have to be completely redone from the ground up. And that takes time. I'd much rather baddy work on vehicle physics than terrains.
If you read all that, then god bless your soul.
If not:
tl;dr The bads far outweighed the goods, so they were removed. Stop whining because they aren't coming back for a good while.
