Author Topic: Why do people show more emotions to dying dogs than real people?  (Read 1383 times)

Just a question.
I seem to get more disturbed when people kill random dogs rather then when people kill random people.

Is it because they can't defend themselves? I'm really wondering.

And yes strangers, people I don't know, if it's someone I know I would be devastated.

maybe you're just loving weird

Is this a response to that SWAT thread?

When SWAT or the Police kill dogs, it's usually to protect themselves.
They usually target big dogs like rottweilers and pit-pulls.
Dogs that have the potential to kill/harm them.

I'm an animal lover too, but I know the value of a human life is greater than an animal's life.

it's a living creature, also it depends if you actually are acquainted with the person. you wouldn't really care if a father of 5 was stabbed and it said on the news.

Actually it's just in general. Not just that thread.

Though I'm not one of those forgets that think that video games increase violence, they somewhat desensitize you to it. And how many highly-violent video games have animals in them? I'd say almost none. Which is why we care about dying animals more.

Also, dogs, our eyes, are nothing but loving, caring creatures who literally wish to do nothing but be our pals. They are basically incapable of what some humans do that make us dislike them: backstabbing, gossip, greed, etc.

This is all just my take on things.

It started with public executions and witch hunts, making witnessing a person's death common. Instead, now we see it in the movies and media all of the time. Dogs and alike don't harm anything (usually.) Pet murder is just less comfortable for society.

If you know 1 dog, you very likely know most dogs.
If you hear of one dying, it's quite sad. It's very very easy to think of that dog and imagine your own.

With other people, it's a bit different.
People are so different from each other that you can't as easily imagine 1 dead person as being someone you know dying.

All deaths are tragic. Human and Animal.
But Animals are simpler than humans and easier to connect to. It makes sense that you'd be upset by the death of one much more than the death of a human stranger.

I personally pretty much never get upset or cry at the deaths of humans in films.
But if a dog dies in it, I'm blubbering like mad.

Plus, it's easier to not feel sad at the death of a bad person.
A criminal, or terrorist or whatnot dying isn't all that sad. You're more upset for the death of innocent civilians, say.
To some extent, it's definitely the same with animals.
Almost all dogs are just innocent creatures.
But if a dog that has attacked or mauled a child is put down, you don't really feel too upset about it.
Think about how many people in that "My neighbours dog killed all my kittens" topic a few weeks back had no remorse at the idea of killing, or even torturing a dog that had done a bad deed.

Dogs are cute. They're also often loving and innocent animals. For this reason, they are valued higher on average than a human.

That makes perfect sense, and same with the replies before about violence desensitization. Guess I'm not a monster after all.

unlike humans, animals don't LIE or RAPE STEAL and you can trust them.

lying doesn't always happen and sometimes it's for the better.
rape can happen with animals I think.
stealing happens with animals.

it's nature, stuff goes down. it's eat or get eaten in the wild. it depends how high they are in the food chain though.
