Author Topic: Do you think we should increase funding for NASA?  (Read 9652 times)

not true. if we discover planets that could sustain humans, we could keep humans alive in multiple parts of the galaxy.
There is no way we can get anywhere beyond our own solar system within a human lifespan, let alone to another galaxy.

We have the technology to reach a distant star within a scientist's lifetime. Look up Project Orion.
Yes there is.

"There is no way a rocket can function in a vacuum"

Military spending took a huge leap post-9/11. This leap in spending would have happened with any administration, liberal or conservative, and it's completely acceptable because the attack made on our country that day killed 2,977 American civilians. I believe that Bush did a great job running our country under the circumstances, but military cuts, as you can see from the graphic, are being made. The Pentagon doesn't even need all the money congress is sending them. Have a look at this article: http://www.military.com/daily-news/2013/04/30/army-says-no-to-more-tanks-but-congress-insists.html

The reason some congressmen are fighting this battle with the Pentagon is because their districts rely on the military industry.

Either way, the military cuts that are underway are reasonable. If you want more money to be funded into our space program, you have to take leadership over the next decade or two by participating in rallies, voting for pro-space representatives, and emailing/calling/talking to your current district representative (whether you're of voting age or not) about the future of our space program and its importance to Americans.

Remember, the key to progress is always an enthusiastic and well-informed constituency. Every little thing helps.

idk, i doubt the people in the wright brothers' time imagined there'd be space flight not 50 years later. we can dream. besides, even if we don't live to see the fruits of our efforts, we will better the world for our children.

Yes there is.

Project Orion was a study of a spacecraft intended to be directly propelled by a series of explosions of atomic bombs behind the craft.

Pretty sure the g-force required for us to get to a solar system within a human life time is actually harmful enough to kill any human aboard the spacecraft.

Remember, just because we might get light speed technology, it doesn't mean we can also go on the spacecraft and fly around. It would kill you.

If we're going to meet alien life, we're going to need some advanced weaponry or something, because they will most definitely have the power to eradicate life on earth as we know it.

Yes meeting new life species is not a smart move.

We can barely get a man to a planet closet to us, let alone to a new solar system for the time being, and probably for ever, we are not capable of doing these things people dream of, increasing funding is a waste of time.

Besides, look at the Voyager 1 and 2 probes, it's been 30+ years and it barely left our solar system, going at speeds that will most likely harm a human being if they are on the spacecraft.

Like giving them a bit more cash is going to put America in a stufftier situation. It could easily be taken out of the military budget. Investing in NASA is an investment in the future; along with the technologies it creates, it inspires children to enter the fields that they're involved in.
Giving any more money to anything is a bad idea right now. Even if it's just taking it from the military budget, that's money that shouldn't be in the military budget in the first place.

But I guess if we don't plan on taking money away from any budgets, than yeah we might as well transfer some to NASA. At least then we can put the money we don't have to good use.

This.

Anyway, I'm thinking other science organizations might need money too. What if we put some of our military budget into NASA and CERN (yes, I know it's a European organization, but it's not like only Europe gets any discoveries from it)

You keep thinking that our current technology is what we'll be using.
NASA does more than space.

It's sad how many of you are misinformed. The United States Military bombed and killed thousands of innocent people at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They don't give forgets about bombing someone else. The only thing stopping them is being bombed back, and for you Americans - they couldn't give two forgets if the American people were bombed. They care about their government and infrastructure It would cost too much to actually be bombed and a large percentage of their military capability would be gone.

Now imagine an American weapon in space, untouchable by any other nation. America has full control as well as the most powerful military on Earth. Checkmate.

Although funnily enough America colonizing Mars would probably give them motive to bomb someone because for forgets sake they're on Mars and untouchable. Even if these are unrealistic scenarios and you think it's stupid and they're improbable. It's still a standing fact that any nation that has power that would make them pretty much immortal is a very, very bad thing.

Also, give me a source for that 'law' of yours that prohibits any space weaponry.
Are you mentally ill...?
