How about random events? For example(Dont take this seriously), UFOs start bombing/lasering the crap out of everyone, dropping off aliens, and causing chaos, requiring an XCOM unit to kill them.

Yeah, I think you mean natural disasters. That means destroying players houses, bricks, and city buildings. For some odd reason I don't see this as being implemented. Too many clients would rage over the tornado that just stole their trailer.

Only problem I see is where the money goes and comes from. City treasury? Dunno.

...isn't the point of a stock market the fact that you invest in the company, meaning that the company gets the money? And then return it when you sell?

The way stock works is that you're basically buying a share of a company's profits. Now what you pay for the stock itself goes directly to the company, and then if the company is doing well and people are willing to pay more for that stock you can re-sell it, or you can keep it and get a cut of the profits the company makes. The large shareholders also have a say in how the company is run.

Of course the reality of it is more complicated than that, but that's the basic idea.

Imo I see the whole in-game stock-market idea as a huge trainwreck in the long run.

What could go in place of that is a currency-exchange.  You invest in some Gold/Silver/Bitcoins/Coal, and when the price of what you invested in goes up, you sell in exchange for Dollars.  Then you buy when the price of that investment goes down.  I think this would be a simpler and easier form of an in-game 'stock market'.

The prices of these currencies would be primarily controlled by supply and demand.  If theres more Gold in the market, then the price goes down.  Less Gold, and the price goes up.  Gold could be conjured into existence by mining ofc.  I'm no expert in this stuff, so tell me what you guys think.

(Maybe even add support for buying food/guns/services with gold and other alternate currencies, lol)
