Shooters are overrated and hurt the other game genres. I've seen fewer and fewer strategy games being made every year, turn based games are dead because people would rather watch stuff in real time with cinematic type action. Developers would rather invest tons of money into graphics to appeal to the young casuals who think good looks = good gamplay rather than gameplay.
Look at the Fallout community, the game was made in 1998 with 2.5d sprites and still has an active community who makes mods for the game and modifies the engine to this day. Fallout 3 had some interesting things to look at like the overview of dc when you leave the vault. However it's color pallet consists of greens and browns and it's gameplay was pretty clunky and repetitive(every quest being go somewhere and shoot something).
Also this whole fanboyism thing they created is pretty bad. I'm looking at the BF3 and CoD players who argue over which game is better. Battlefield and 1942 were both ww2 shooters, however different styles of gameplay. BF3 and CoD:MW are both modern day shooters cashing off the generic terrorists and typical badguy nations(china, Russia, iran). It's become who is a better type thing, who makes the best graphics, destructible terrain, and hype. A lot of the older Battlefield veterans agree that the game tries to emulate cod like with the close combat DLC.
