You need to learn the spells first. After his first level up, he should be able to learn a spell.

On the way there you get in some fights with boars. Quincy is now at 82 HP, and Tyler at 91 (thanks to his loving massive endurance.) You both now have 4 XP and the party has 6G. You enter the forest, which is pretty normal. As you're walking, a deer leaps across the path.
