It's not 'unamerican,' if anything it's 'uneuropean.' Most cars in America are auto transmissions, we're the lazy slobs of the world so that makes sense. In other places (like Europe) manual prevails.
Anyway, it's something that takes practice. The concept is easy enough, but it's entirely brown townog so there is little-to-no room for error and it requires precise operation to be driven properly. Hell, I'm not good enough at shifting to always shift between two gears smoothly without the passengers being pushed forward when I put in the clutch and the car stops accelerating. I just think it's interesting that I'll be fine-tuning my crude experience with manual on a loving Porsche.
