Am I the only car guy who doesn't like deafening loud cars and backfire sounds and such? Tbh I reeaally don't like it when a car is so loud to the point where you can't enjoy the sound in its entirety, and the backfires make it sound like the engine is blowing itself to pieces

rip

My uncle has a rhino that backfires at least ten times a minute and being so close to the exhaust it's like getting punched in the ear repeatedly.

I have VERY high standards for a loud car

  • It has to sound good. A honda with the stock diamter pipe and cheap thrush muffler will NEVER sound good.
  • It can't be too loud. Open headers on the street? You're just a obnoxious ass imo.
  • Induction > exhaust. A giant turbo spooling, an open filter or air horns on carbs sucking in 950cfm of air will always sound better then 4 inch cherrybombs anyday.
  • Tone Vs. Noise. Just because you put glasspacks on your smog'd down 78' trans-am does not mean you have the best sounding car in the world. It'll honestly sound like stuff because the noise just overwhelms everything and you're left with no real "depth" to the sound.

My alfa has no mufflers just a small round resonator at the downpipe and a bigger box resonator in the middle, but it's not that loud. At idle it sounds a bit like a muffled 305 small block with a mild cam. Cruising speeds it's about 120db of sound but that's more because I have no sound deadening anywhere on the car. Going through a school-zone is fun because the carbs run rich and it'll start popping and backfiring and scaring little children.

THESE TOO ESPECIALLY

I swear to god my town has so many stuff cars with fart-cans and trucks with obnoxiously loud glasspacks and open headers, oh my god they sound so horrible

s85 engine with eisenmann race exhaust. i never thought I'd fall in love with such ear rape
those new gt350's sound amazing with a more free-following exhaust as well

i can't agree that forced induction sounds nicer than naturally aspirated engines though, at least in the case of a car with more than 4 cylinders. while i do like a good bov, turbo spool gets old quick for me. superchargers sound sick so long as they're like no more than half as loud as the actual exhaust

speaking of fart can Hondas: last weekend i went to grand rapids for artprize with a friend and there was this faded-blue early 90s civic hatch following a black frs. it had hood pins, ugly black rims, lowered suspension (on likely just new springs), the whole deal. he revved his engine as he passed us and i threw up on the spot

also saw two slammed, red s2000's and a stock gunmetal s2k that day

I hate the sound of turbos. I think they make the engine sound like a vacuum cleaner. Big v8 engines all the way!

My friend passed a car show on the way to her house today so she told me where it was so I could go investigate. It was really small and held mainly private restored classics and a few modded modern muscle cars, but it was cool nevertheless. As I got there, a C2 Corvette peeled out of the lot with his rear swaying back and forth, tires up in smoke. A few more people did their little scenes as they left, so I kinda did my own since everyone was paying attention to my car anyway.

That entire strip of Highway is just smothered in tire tracks now.

on the subjects of sounds there's literally no such thing as a better sounding engine than a rotary with an itb

My school went into lockdown because they assumed a truck backfiring was gunshots, small town blues.
