I understand that feeling. I had to work for several months to be able to afford it. But I have to say having used Gimp for 4 years switching to Photoshop really wasn't all the different.
There are some things about Photoshop that are better, but for the most part I could still work in Gimp and it wouldn't effect the quality of my work.
