I guess the reason why some people oppose gay marriage even if it doesn't affect them is because they are religious, and that they don't want their children thinking being gay is okay by society since they want them to follow the biblical example of marriage. It's kinda BS at this point, but it's true.
Infact, America Was founded under dethiests and atheists. America became very Pro religious back in the 60's and 40's In WW2 and the cold war. Thinking it was the end of the world, Because Atomic Bombs and horrid weapons of mass destruction.

Well, the southern aristocracy that grew from slavery was always highly religious in a sense, since technology and education wasn't advanced (but there was good cheap labor for a while) and a idyllic life with religious fulfillment satisfied many southern communities (along with racism). Also the Great awakenings were also important.
