They do this just to make the already-cheaply-made tablet PC appear like it's screen is larger than it actually is.

And who would need 'retina display'? Apple is just making a simple technology seem like some space-age cutting-edge feature, while all you need to do to get a retina display is crank up the resolution.

Bottom line: An iPad is not going to be as good as you think it is.
Stick to the unbiased reviewers like AnandTech and Tom's hardware, and focus on the actual hardware, not some biased Apple propaganda.

A stupid term to describe a screen that has more pixels than you can see.*

I bet less than half of the people complaining about retina have actually seen it in person. Going from standard screens to retina is a huge and noticeable difference. Youre doubling pixel density while keeping the same screen size, giving everything an extremely clean and sharp look. I hardly ever see any square pixels unless I'm zooming in on pictures. Text scales as well, so you never see any aliased text.
