Author Topic: Am I the only one pissed off about FTL?  (Read 3567 times)

Damn I didn't even know they got this much out of it, the games great but clearly there is not $200k worth of content.

Yes.

Imagine if Badspot released Blockland and was like "welp I'm done." He never posted on the forum again, he never released another update.

We also gave him $200,000.
This is how game development used to happen. Publisher pays a ton for game, Game gets released.  Look at square enix and tomb raider 2013 (? or was it 2012?) and sleeping dawgs, These games didn't scratch their costs.

The game was already funded, Anything past that is giving to the company, Not the game, I expect it funded their next game too.

Anyway:

(Sorry it's not hosted on imgur, Somebody reported imgur to the iwf and my isp is blocking it still atm)

By the way, games aren't cheap to make.
can't you just download a c++ compiler and some libraries and start making a game? how does that cost money?

Games also used to be in 8-bit and some didn't even have save features, and that was okay at the time. But this is 2013, standards have far improved since then and it's not unfair to expect an indie developer with an ungodly amount of capital to release updates for a game with so little content.

Damn I didn't even know they got this much out of it, the games great but clearly there is not $200k worth of content.

That's also not considering the money that the game made when it actually went on sale. Considering there's been about 250,000 people playing the game concurrently the week it was launched, that's 2 and a half million more dollars in capital before Valve's cut.

That would mean not masturbating or leveling up their warcraft characters.

games don't have a general price. It's extremely cheap to produce a rougelike and $10,000 is quite a bit even for Faster Than Light.
It's basically images and scripts and a wee bit of sound. Game was fun but sure as hell didn't deserve as much money as the kickstarter made.
This is probably also why there hasn't been additional content in FTL.
Additional content is becoming a standard in gaming and especially in kickstarter funded games.
not every game needs dlc.

In fact no games should.
I don't even know how to reply to this.

"Its developers had no experience with making video games"
Redigit made Super Mario Brothers X

I don't even know how to reply to this.

Oh I'm sorry for not liking games ripping or holding out content out to be dlc, Or games being unfinished.

I guess I just like games to be finished.

I don't think you can compare Super Mario Brothers X to Civilization and Bioshock okay

I'm sorry do you have like AIDS or downs or something

I'm sorry I don't see the problem here? I'm sorry my opinion is causing you so much pain.

Seriously though, Paying £3.99 for hard difficulty screams exploitation.

I'm not against Expansions though.

^ That's why I like badspot as a developer.

He's genuine, and has a genuinely good game here.

I bought FTL and never played it. So I don't know about it yet.

But, as far as kickstarter goes.. I've kickstarted a handful of things. And I can tell you right now that all of them are not done yet. And were started a year or so ago. (All game projects)

"The betas" have hardly improved, and the game's promised features arent even close to being done yet.
Kickstarter is great for stuff sure, but Indie developer's on Kickstarter are like kids spendnig their lunch money on pokemon cards.
page loss :(

I'm similar. I dont buy games new anymore. I wait until all the "dlc" is added to the "GAME OF THE YEAR EIDITION" then ill buy it.

But i dont have a console anymore anyways. The DLC fever of 2009 scared me away forever.

EDIT: Let me rephrase.
Games shouldnt need DLC.

DLCs are an after thought. Not something you PLAN FOR.
So loving tired of games that pull this stuff today.

I think you have a terrible understanding of what DLC is.
Look at the Borderlands series for example. The DLC is those games were completed after the game was finished and increased the content of the game. They weren't holding out on it and the game did not feel unfinished.

Yes some companies do that, but that's not the fault of downloadable content. That would be the developer's fault.

Also, a little list I made showing how much funding some games you may or may not know about on steam.
Thomas Was Alone - $2,452/4,000... A platformer game that was pretty well received and barely managed to make the funds necessary after the campaign failed.
Cthulu Saves the World - $6,898/3,000... A neat RPG that literally only costs 99 cents.
Octodad Dadliest Catch - $24,812/20,000...A game that's pretty well known now and barely hit it's funding target.
Divekick - $32,543/30,000... A very simple fighting game that's developers cancelled the campaign before the end date after they secured funding.

None of these games received 20x their desired funding and still completed there game. So this whole extra money because games are expensive stuff is just bullstuff.

I can agree with that last part. I was pretty annoyed with any game that gave you extra content that you can't get otherwise just for preordering it.

No, you're just an idiot. Nobody is saying that they should release games without features and then sell them to you later as DLC.

If that's what you got from reading the thread then I don't have the medicine or medical training to help with your condition.

A game can always use more content. The reason why games stick around for years now is because the developers keep them alive with new content.

Do you think people would still be playing TF2 if they never updated it past version 1.0?

I think pandan meant a game shouldn't need or rely on DLC. Not that new content is not wanted.

the game did not feel unfinished.
Yeah so I would have preferred them to start working on borderlands 3, Or something different. I don't really stick with games long enough for dlc to matter to me.

I understand what you mean, but I think most fans would prefer to get the most enjoyment out of a game while they can instead of waiting another couple years for the sequel. I think I personally logged 330+ hours into Borderland 2 and the expansions we quite a bit of that time. I haven't even gotten the second ultimate vault hunter pack or Halloween pack yet and that would for sure push me over 400.

And I could name countless games like that.
Binding of Isaac, Skyrim, Grand Theft Auto IV, Fable 3, ect. It's not always about milking the game so much as giving the fans something to look forward to while they wait for the next game.
