Honestly, if they are "dating" at that young of age, it's not genuine. They usually aren't in love, and it can't even be considered a real date since you or your "date" can't drive each other in a car or something.

once a couple is in love they are in a serious relationship, and they are no longer dating.

you kids seem to think dating means anything from holding hands to painting the babies room together.

I know you can be in love, but I honestly think in middle school, most people date just to say they are. Of course there ARE real relationships. I'm also saying in a traditional date, the boyfriend or girlfriend drives themselves to a restaurant, in middle school you can't drive. It's not like a high school date.
