Trion, Makers of Rift, Defiance and End Of Nations are making a cube world style game now.

I'm kind of interested to see what a large company can do.

They see that cube world is hurting for production updates and possession of speed and they are going to try to cash in on it.

Why make this game?

I anticipate this is a question we're going to get asked a lot, and fortunately for us the answer is a simple one. We hit a point after working on Rift for years where we were asking ourselves what it would look like to make a game in one year instead of four. We didn't want to leave behind the things we like about online RPGs (playing with friends, logging in from anywhere, classes, exploration, loot, dungeons!) but we also didn't want to spend another 3-4 years building something that felt like the same game we had just finished. We had been playing a ton of MineCraft, Terraria too, and Cube World wasn't yet released but the potential was clear. The whole voxel builder space was looking like not just a one-off but a genre that had legs, and one that we were really enjoying. Long story short, we thought (and think!) that there are some seriously untapped spaces in the voxel builder/adventure/explore arena and we want to play, and make, the game that brings those elements together. Consider just a few of those ideas: practically unlimited dungeon variations, MMO style worlds with the mutability of a voxel world, and being able to log in week after week to new content hidden in fresh worlds. Add to that the thing that we knew we had the background and tech to do (connected online play with persistence and progression) and we have a game that we think will stand out and is worth making.

We're going to have some RPG/Adventure elements that I think will potentially appeal to you. We have a pretty interesting loot system, we're working on procedural dungeons now (inspired by roguelike dungeon gen), and we have an action combat system with classes and abilities. Terraria definitely had/has some of that, but I think that in 3D we'll be able to take it farther than they did and do some new interesting things.

Ahh! And I missed the part about exploration/hand holding. We've got plans for that as well, it's not in game yet but we want to have quests that guide you to the 'completion' of worlds (cycling/new worlds is also a major component we're wanting to do). The broad idea is that you'll be 'collecting the 10 pendants of power to awaken the great one' and then once defeated everyone on the map gets a reward and a new world will generate up

I think they're going to be livestreaming it later today. http://www.twitch.tv/trionworlds

I haven't liked Trion since they turned End of Nations into another League of Legends when it was supposed to be a massive RTS.

Problem being that the RTS part of it sucked.

when will these cube games stop appearing

This compared to Vox at least looks a ton better and is made by a better company.
Albeit: Vox is a crap copy of Cube Worlds that even got on Steam SOMEHOW.

They're playing loving Defiance. It is not fun at all.

I think they said trove is at 1:30 pst.

Probably not any time soon. There will probably be a new genre for games with procedural-generated cube-based worlds if there isn't already.

i'm usually not the one to say this but

this really looks like a gigantic cube world ripoff
it's not like cube world has super original design or something(since it's just cubes), but when i look at this image, i can't conclude anything else than that this is just cube world except with outlines.

but hey, perhaps these people won't forget their game up so brutally i wanted my money back for the first time in my life

hey, if this is cube world 2.0 sign me up, maybe competition will speed W0llay's dumb ass up, if he even cares.

lol why are you so mad at wollay, at least you got a bloody game

I honestly think that this looks really polished up, and without a doubt - it will be much more successful than Cube-World because this is being made by a big company, and they have enough revenues and funds to advertise and throw out there.

While I agree with this I can't help but feel bad for Wollay. He's been working so hard and for so long on Cube World and when he finally releases it this huge company comes out of nowhere and pretty much makes Cube World: The better version.

As cool as it looks, and as fun as it may be. I want Cube World to be more successful because Wollay's earned it.
