The worst in the series is probably Sonic Heroes, that's when they started introducing too many characters.

Sonic Heroes is terrible. But despite being terrible, it still had some sort of charm to it. Idk, it might just have to do with nostalgic memories but I really liked some of the level ideas(not the levels themselves of course). And hey, the music was awesome, let's be honest here. I still feel like dancing to Bingo Highway from time to time.

Also, I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about but only one new character was introduced in Sonic Heroes: E-123 Omega. All the others had been introduced earlier.

Don't see this as me defending Sonic Heroes, btw - I think it's a terrible game too. Just noting some good points.

ehh knuckles' and rouge's tracks from SA2 just seem like the best to me although SA had some good music too like speed highway

Hey, it's a good game in its own right. People just don't like it because its different from other sonic games. Slowing down every once in a while can be a good thing.

I don't dislike it because it's different from all the other sonic games(because spoiler alert: pretty much every 3D sonic game except adventure 1 & 2 are different), I dislike it because it's just a bad game lol.
