Author Topic: More extensive tutorial.  (Read 881 times)

The tutorial we have is not big enough! We need bigger, and need it to cover:

Prints
Events
Swimming
Demonstrating activating
Vehicle driving

How it could be done:
Prints, swimming, and vehicle driving could be done like in the v9-v20 tutorial
Activating could be done by requiring the playing to push a button to make a bridge appear over an impassable gap, the pressing a button to open the door.
Events could be done by making the user apply any event to a brick and activating it, then proceeding into another room to modify an unvented door so it can open, allowing them to enter another room.

been thinking of building a new tutorial, actually, so yeah

Yeah, it's been pretty apparent with all of the Steam users that the tutorial needs work.

"Press T to talk." is the most commonly used and needed response to new players.

And changing your name.

I don't see why Badspot didn't include all of the stuff that was in the old tutorial.

Name = steam nick if not taken and if unset

Name = steam nick if not taken and if unset
people tend to make their steam names with the absolute weirdest characters

I support this! How to use almost every control should be included too, and what things like emitters are should be included as well.

How about the use of macros?

Maybe then split it up into a beginner and an advanced tutorial.

I still don't know how macros work..

I agree with this. Maybe there can be a advanced tutorial you unlock after completing the first, more basic one, so they can begin to learn some of the more advanced, useful and powerful parts of the game.

Gonna start taking notes through this thread and actually start work on a tutorial once I finish my Height app...

I still don't know how macros work..
Press ctrl + 0 (on the numpad) to start a macro, and press ctrl + 0 again to stop it.
When a macro is recording, every time you move, plant, change color and ctrl + z a brick, that will be recorded and when you press ctrl + numpad enter your character will automatically replicate the macro you have recorded. Keep in mind that the macro will not work correctly if you turn your character more than ~90 degrees to either way and  keep on building with the controls "changed".

Macros are great for server without the duplicator but can also be really helpful if the duplicator is present. Myself I use macros all the time as they usually don't forget up as often as the duplicator. (As in, duplicating more bricks than you want)
