Author Topic: Why is it offensive to make fun of Mohammed?  (Read 5865 times)

I don't know much about the muslim religion, but from what I remember, the whole "You can't make depictions of Mohammed" was a trend or something that had no direct involvement with religious restrictions, people just took it too far or something

remember when south park was going to do an episode making fun of mohammed, and all the comedy was supposed to be derived from making fun of an uncensored mohammed

and then they ended up censoring it anyways

IIRC The Koran says something about not picturing god and Muhammed, also because Muslim extremists are dangerous people who track you down if you make fun of their beliefs. The whole "no depictions of Mohammed" thing began when some guy in Denmark drew a picture of Mohammed with a bomb in his turban to poke fun at Self Delete bombers. It raised fuss and the guy lives in fear every day.

The original idea for the "Cartoon wars" episodes was that Matt & Trey would make Mohammed jokes, but have the animation style of the episode copy Family Guy so the terrorists would accidentally bomb their studio instead of Comedy Central.

It's considered acceptable to mock Christians in the United States because they're the major religious denomination. That being said, it's not entirely morally sound but no one bats an eye at it because Christians are not being actively marginalized in society like other religions. It's the same reason why no one cares if you call someone a cracker.
This is exactly my thought, but worded much better.

...the superiority of Christianity...Try declaring the message that there is no God to the people in Saudi Arabia; get back to me on that, if you get out alive. God has given us freedom to choose.

I did not say this. However, Saudi Arabia is a heavily islamic cultural region.

There are governments ran by Christianity in the same way.
It has nothing to do with any sort "superiority" of Christianity and it's not unique to Islam
Also, calling one religion "superior" is highly ethnocentric

I've got a better question. Why is it not ok to make fun of Jews?

I think Antisemitism is a much more prevalent force throughout history, with Pogroms, Riddler, and a bunch of other people basically persecuting Jews worse than any other religion, so I think there's a hyper sensitivity to joking about Jews (in the view of some people of course)

I'm muslim and I can say you guys are pretty stupid.

Do some loving research before you call us terrorists and starfishs.

Are you being serious?

I don't believe muslims are terrorists or starfishs, i never have.

The same reason its offensive to make fun of Jesus or whatever other figure of religion.

Thats like saying, "Why is it offensive to make fun of someones favourite actor?"

who the hell gets offended by people making fun of celebrities?

besides, yknow, the celebrities themselves

Maybe actor was the wrong word. Idol is probably what I should have said.

the people who make south park are the best people

people didn't hate the jews for no reason.

Are you kidding? I make fun of Jews on a daily basis just casually. They're probably the religion I casually lash the most. I even do it to Jews' faces and I've never gotten one even slightly offended reaction.
ya people make fun of jews all the time.
people didn't hate the jews for no reason.
they're greedy

Don't you have to worship it for it to be an idol.

What if it was just like. An illustration?
I just learned this a few weeks before my break. It was something about how he didn't want them to draw him because he saw himself as just the messenger, but not as god himself. I don't really remember since we dove right into Japan's history after the end of the Islam unit.

A lot of Organized Christian nations tended to hate the Jews cause they thought that they were foolish for not accepting the Messiah, but they also did kinda develop the stereotype of sniveling merchants in the late 19th and early twentieth century. Also the fact that Israel was forcefully created by OTHER PRIMARILY NON-JEWISH countries didn't help in the twentieth century. I'm not saying all Jews are blameless, but they did seemingly get more crap than they deserved
