Author Topic: Why do so many RPGs have only one regular battle theme?  (Read 1304 times)

A corollary: It's also really irritating in games with nice overworld and/or dungeon music when battles happen every 10 seconds, robbing you of a chance to listen to the much-longer piece of music you haven't heard as much.  No, instead of just keeping that playing over the fight, it has to switch to the same battle theme you've been hearing for hours.

Pokemon battle music got on my nerves pretty quick after a while

the opening tune is alot worse

Ive seen more indie games, including flash RPG games, have more variety in battle music, even if its just music that relates to your current area. I mean, I love Final Fantasy music, but they like to keep the same theme in battle, and it does get a bit tiresome, though i personally dislike having to hear the same exact victory theme, which is in nearly every turn based combat RPG out there.

What's great about Bravely Default is that you can set your encounter rate percentage to 100% to grind OR -100% to get around to places so if you like this one song you could just walk around and find treasures while the song goes on

I'd like it if battle themes changed depending on the area/type of enemy. Like, tribal in lava worlds and piano-ish in ice worlds. Or spooky while fighting undead and urban while fighting bandits.

IIRC Toontown had multiple battle themes.

Exactly this.

^ Basically all the Kh Games. With the exception of 'World that never was'

If I ever make or compose for a turn-based RPG, it would probably be something like this.  One theme for weak enemies, one for strong enemies, one for creepy enemies, and one for enemies that are just too cool to use anything else.
