Detailed is fine.

Being able to cripple a server by spawning 20 of the item is not fine.
There's this thing. It's called "per-player limits" in the server options. There are individual options that control how many items, vehicles, bots, projectiles, etc each client is allotted. You can easily prevent people from spamming items this way.

However.

If your server is crippled by having 20 of any item, your computer is a stump.
This shouldn't ever be an issue.

This is not entirely true. Torque is not an efficient engine by any means and it is very easy to run into lag with multiple bricks and items being rendered at once, especially when the item models have high polycounts. Whether this is server-crippling or not depends on the client's system and how they're running the server. There are three possible situations:

1: Running an internal server from the host client: If you lag, everyone lags, regardless of cause.
2: Running a dedicated server on the same system as the client: Theoretically possible to lag the server if the client lags enough to affect their entire system.
3: Running a dedicated server on dedicated hardware: Completely impossible to cause server lag by spamming items.

... That being said.

You guys were gonna hate me once I posted this, but given the current conversation topic, now you're going to hate me even more. The Shining Laser was the first weapon I ever made, so its rather significant to me. I wanted the remake to do it justice... so I intentionally went overboard.

Nearly 4500 polygons already and I haven't even finished half of the weapon.

Cooling fans. Yep, I went there.

Note that this is still WIP. The design is subject to change.

My computer wouldn't be affected as much as the general community's.
So yeah, how dare those 14 year old hosts not get gaming computers bought for them.
It's all their fault for liking weapons that their computer can't handle, and even moreso their fault that they think they can handle high item limits because it's never been an issue beforehand.

Oh lets not forget the part where the item limit only affects spawning the items, not how many players can be holding them at once. So you'd have to limit your player count as well.

But sure, let's keep blaming the victims, and not the trolls (who inevitably exist) or the providers (who are capable of making good choices).

The server itself probably wont lag. But it's likely half the players will.

Your intentions for making it are perfectly fine though. The only problem I had before is how ignorant you were about this kind of thing. At least you acknowledge the problems with excessive polygons now.

I was quite the ass about the issue before, wasn't I? Heh.

I will either restrict spawning the item to admins only or use a low-poly variant of the model to prevent speed problems. Or perhaps use an RTB preference to control which model is shown on the brick. There's a lot of different possibilities.

I absolutely love this model.

My 1997 computer that I just upgraded from with its limitations never had an issue with lag due to item models.
I honestly can't see it ever coming down to face counts being responsible for crippling lag.
Excessive emitters, player connections, relays, sure. Ive never had or experienced straight up model lag before.

Not saying it doesn't exist and can't happen, but I'm fairly sure it would take many more than 20 to do anything much unless the model was completely off the walls.

NoBody, please drop it. I don't want a flame war.

On-Topic: dear god stop me now.

Let's play a game. It's called "how many loving polygons is he using".

Would me guessing be cheating?

Would me guessing be cheating?
I haven't told you how many are in it now, so no.

hello,

can you complete/make more uber weapons?
The Uber-Weaponset isn't very high on my list of priorities at the moment. My sword pack was the most popular of my works so that's what I was planning on tackling after I finish the laser set.

Additionally, most of the models I made for the Uberset are satisfactory in one way or another (animations, design, etc) save for a few minor tweaks I'd want to make, so I don't want to just start them all from scratch again. Because of this, some of them will be waiting until I get my data recovered off my hard drive, particularly the Uber-Shotgun and Uber-SMG. The Uber-RYNO's model was completely lost though so that one might see some progress rather soon.

Right now my main priority is finishing a couple weapons so I can post in the Add-Ons board and draw some actual attention to the project. Or perhaps, I don't know, someone here could help? :[

Also, please note that I cannot send personal messages. Do not PM me. If I notice a PM I'll reply to it here, but you're better off just doing it here or on Steam. I check this thread every day and I'm (almost) always signed into Steam.

The green part is from the original model. Once I redesign that part of the weapon it's pretty much complete.

Still open to polycount guesses.

As it is now, Ill guess around 7K.

Oh and Takato, when you were gone I modeled a fair pack of specialty swords and other misc. weapons. If you were going to
redo your sword pack, perhaps you'd like to take a look at what I have by any chance.
I can guarantee that the models aren't up to your standards, but for ideas it mat be worth it.

Takato, you should do something with the 'TXR-46 Automatic Shotgun'

edit: I just realized that that is a link to an RTB backup I found somewhere on the forums

it's not phishing incase you are worried

Eh, the TXR-46 was a ripoff from Turok, so I probably wont bother. The Uber-Shotgun is a lot better even as it is now.

I could do something if you really want me to though.

I dunno, I was just saying that I and my friends had alot of fun with that and that led me to the conclusion that other people probably enjoyed it as well

Those cooling fans are animated right
