I'm sure they won't at first. Part of developing planets is taking new things that their Medival Engineers team discovers, so I am guessing they will release Planets mostly as a large asteroid with gravity and possibly oxygen, and once water physics is figured out in Medieval Engineers they'll add it to SE.
They said them self that planets won't be large asteroids. Planets will have plants and an atmosphere. Some will be habital and some won't. Size and gravity will also vary.

I compiled the source code and got the planets to work. They're pretty bland so far so have a few screenshots.

Small 8000m planet

Large 120,000m planet

Habital planets have oxygen and an atmosphere. The gravity gets gradually larger the closer you get. The smallest planets (8000m) has a gravity of 0.3 and the largest planet (120,000m) has a gravity of 1.2.
There's an option to limit jetpacks on planets. I was able to use mine on the smallest but on the largest I couldn't. Once you're on a planet with this on you're forgeted unless you have a ship with the muscle to push back up.

Oh and did I mention how long it would take to get to a bigger sized planet with a max speed of 104m/s? I had to use a mod to increase the max speed to even think about going to it.

EDIT: I uploaded a video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbvdTGVccus

No burning on entry? Bummer. I bet that'll get added in one day, though.

It's far from done. I was hoping it'd be much closer but I doubt they're going to be releasing planets in this condition any time soon.

I looke forward to crashing into planets at high speed

I'm glad to see you could deliver, my attempt failed pretty bad. Regardless planets look great.
How was the FPS and what kind of rig are you playing with?

It was really smooth the entire time. Other videos of it were showing a ton of lag but the one hickup I had was captured in that video and it was only for half a second. I got my standard >75fps max settings with 2x MSAA.
But I generally get stuff fps if I'm walking around a massive ship. I have an i5 4690k and a GTX 970.

Oh damn, powerful rig. But the way it seems is that planets are pretty well performance friendly.

Yeah I was really surprised. Spawning in massive asteroids generally lags but this had no noticable impact on performance.

Good thing keen has been working on their performance instead of tossing in stuff.

Alright guys, I'm taking on one hell of a challenge.. I'm going to the edge of the universe. I'm already partway there thanks to speed mods and 240 jump drives. I feel this will be outstanding.
I teleported there...

My lord what have I done!
Further study shows that the further you teleport from there the more forgeted up you get.

Just some videos by youtubers showing off the planet source code development incase you guys haven't seen these:

edit: I forgot to mention, also, that wastedspace and morphologis discovered that keen might have improved sim speed in the game since last update. Here's their patchology demonstrating an example of something that would originaly lag the game and make it near unplayable:

New update: There are now pirate base encounters and drone encounters that will attack. Pirate bases have loot in them.

Auto pilot now will evade asteroids and ships in the way.

Keen has shown preview screenshots of the development of planets and, my god, they are incredible. I will try and link them here in a moment. Until then here is the video of the update: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzMT5U2I4mg

Edit: Jesus christ, just look at these.

im too forgetin lazy to compile planet source code
ghhh i hope they release it soon

this hasn't worked since I got windows 10 and it's a directx problem I'm sure
