vps? You have Android. Since Android is based off Linux, if it's rooted then just install the debian ARM packages and run it native.
I'd try to install another distro if possible. Some of the bigger tablets have USB right? Maybe you could boot from a flash drive?

Android is designed to keep you from gaining root access. And it has a user for every application to store it's files in. Not very efficient for use as a computer.

How about a file storage server for your own personal use? that would be awesome if you could make it accessible to all your devices. It's like having a tiny command-line dopbox.

How about BL? That doesn't take a lot of processing power to host. At least I don't think it does.

Dude, a vps is a remote server. I don't think it's a good idea to host any kind of server from an android phone.

EDIT: Speaking of SSH connections, remember that Minecraft server that I set up and I'm hosting locally using tmux? I want to access it remotely with an SSH client from my phone and laptop. Anyone have any idea what I run on the server computer to achieve this?
