having trouble deciding what WM i should use for my desktop

bspwm, i3, or just openbox

i like tiled wm's

i don't get why ya'll have problems with awesome

i guess customizing it is hard? the only change i make is
A: my terminal launches a script that sets the background from the dumbass one it is by default
B: i make all the screens have the same setting for tiling algorithm

neither of those are more than a one liner, and the thing works fantastically
it even works with dual screens, with separate workspaces for each screen

also in relation to the ssh stuff

stop running it on the default port, i swear all of those bots stop. use an out-of-the-blue port or use some other service's default port.

Oh yeah.
Take it off the default port, start using keys.

Suddenly, blur is off the map and literally untouchable for the next few millennia.

Unfortunately Blueblur knows nothing and you'll probably have to explain keys to him

Technically, if his computer gets compromised his SSH key can be compromised. If it's an intelligent virus it might even be able to detect that he's using SSH to connect to a server on X port.

If his computer gets compromised, it's likely it's fine tuned to Linux, and I bet it's a fairly good bet it knows about keys and would check for them.

that would explain his resistance to something that is just as easy

oh that was definitely me

but see - you're underestimating how loving easy it is to scan the entire internet for ssh servers

there are bots that scan the entire internet for ssh servers, then try to break into them

no i'm serious. there are bots active today hitting my servers right now that will hit yours and will try to break into your servers

here's the latest logs from my vps - this is just today's authentication logs (eh, plus or minus a few hours) http://lugnut.co.vu/failed.txt

just so we're clear, there were eight thousand, seven hundred and ninety five failed login attempts
JUST loving TODAY
81609 break in attempts over the last two weeks.

and you think you can hide by not spreading your ip around? how naive

use key based authentication or get hacked. that's just how it is today.do you think that just because i'm paranoid, you can ignore the COLD HARD FACT that your server will see NINE THOUSAND BREAK IN ATTEMPTS OVER TWO DAYS?
do you think i'm stupid? do you think i'm lying? why the forget are you ignoring my advice to not use passwords, and instead use math???

there's a username. i'll admit that it'd have to be a more targeted attack for the info to be leveraged against you... but i hope your root password doesn't exist or is like 200 characters long and never used

can't you just get their IPs and block them? i used to do this when i was being ddos'd from three IPs every loving day

edit: lel i installed php5 mysql and phpmyadmin on my vps its so simple now im gonna install some kinda control panel, give me some ideas? (must be free xd)

Actually, I was asleep. I live in America.

So yeah, don't use default ports, and start authenticating with keys. Got it. Also, what would I use to generate such a key that would be secure enough for my purposes?

EDIT: Just saw this post.
Unfortunately Blueblur knows nothing and you'll probably have to explain keys to him
Yeah, I don't know stuff about servers except for what I've already learned.
