What's wrong with your workspace selector? The highlight for the currently selected workspace extends way too far beyond where it's supposed to.

Otherwise I like your setup.

not sure how to fix that, i just came back to bspwm a few days ago so i'm still trying to learn the ropes

Dont do it. Pantheon sucks.

and no it isn't. it's perfectly fine, and good to use at that.

What are some good terminal applications out there?
I have i3 in case I don't feel like using XFCE. And terminal applications just work so well with i3.

Here is what I am currently.
Text Editor: Vim/Nano
File Manager: Ranger
System Monitor: HTop

And I'm using urxvt as my terminal.

urxvt is the only terminal I ever use.

I'm not asking for a different terminal. Please read my post again. I already use urxvt.

I just figured out you meant CLI programs. They're not called 'terminal applications,' a terminal application is an application that allows you to access a terminal; i.e. rxvt.

try out ncmpcpp + mpd for music

I guess I'll contribute.

ncmpcpp + mpd for music, as Pacha said.
irssi for IRC
profanity for XMPP
vim for text editing
lynx for the interwebs
tin for usenet / RSS
tmux for terminal multiplexing
rtorrent for downloading torrents

Here's a blog about CLI programs. http://inconsolation.wordpress.com/

i usually use weechat for irc, just cause of customisation

Weechat is another common one, but irssi is by far my favorite. It's also quite customizable.

What do you guys use IRC for anyway? Just curious.

Conversations. Getting help. Multiuser discussions. There's a bunch of uses, it's one of the most widely adopted communication protocols even in 2014.

Wow. I've never even used it apart from the built in IRC client from that old version of RTB. I never knew it was that widely used.

EDIT: I should probably learn how to use Vim, huh? I never really got into it because of how easy nano was.

vim has a tutorial included with the package

there's also this

i found both of them helpful to be honest

Once you start using vim you'll never be able to use any other text editor. I sent this to my friend not 10 minutes ago:
