Author Topic: I just tried sushi for the first time today!  (Read 2761 times)

Sushi is disgusting and I don't understand how people can put that stuff in their mouth.

I mean, I don't like seafood in general, but eating raw is just euggggblehghh.

Which kind of sushi did you get? If its the cylindrical pieces of rice with seafood and other vegetables wrapped in Nori (Edible japanese seeweed), its called Norimaki.
There are several types of sushi, but I cant remember them all so Ill just source from wikipedia
Chirashizushi - A bowl of sushi rice topped with sushi ingredients
Inarizushi - Dumping pouch made of fried tofu normally containing sushi rice
Makizushi (Norimaki) - Most likely the kind you got
Futomaki - Similar to Norimaki, but fatter (IE around 2 inches wide(
Hosomaki - Similar to Norimaki but with Nori on the outside and normally containing only 1-2 fillings
Temaki - Think of a ice cream cone (Completely coneshaped) made of Nori and filled with rice and filling
Uramaki - Similar to Norimaki but a bit larger, but not as large as Futomaki
Narizushi - Gutted fish are stuffed and covered in salt, and then placed in a barrel and then lathered again with salt then pressed down with a special stone made for this purpose. Days pass and the water then seeps out. After about 6 months, the fish is then made into any kind of sushi and then ready to eat.
Nigirizushi - This is the most popular form of sushi right after Norizushi. Its a rectangular piece of rice which then has a bit of wasabi on the top. A topping consisting of a single type of fish like salmon, tuna, squid, ect is pressed ontorp of the rice with the wasabi acting as a sort of improvised glue.
Gunkanmaki - Subtype of Nigirizushi in which it is produced like Nigiri, but instead is wrapped in nori to make it look similar to a battleship.
Temarizushi - A hand pressed piece of sushi which in the end looks like a ball.
Oshizushi - think of a cracker. Oshizushi is just like that. Toppings are added to the bottom, then covered in rice and toppings, and then pressed together in a special box called a oshibako to make a delicious square piece of sushi.
Then the last kind of sushi is Western Style. I cant really find any difference between Norimaki and Western style except that in western style Rice is on the outside, then nori, then the fillings.
Anyway I hope this helps
Sushi forget yeah :D

Whole Foods started in Texas (Austin), but about 15 years ago they became a chain supermarket.

yeah I bet you dont like caviar either

I don't know it was bad sushi, or if it's just not for me, but the first (and last) time I had sushi, it made me nauseous. It tasted okay, but it was just not sitting well.

Sushi is really good if it's actual sushi.
From an actual Japanese Sushi restaurant.

Anything from a supermarket is disgusting.

Agreed.

I dont think eating raw dead animal flesh wrapped around seaweed is going to taste very good...

I especially would not trust it if it was fixed in an asian restuarant
why?
asian restuarants have a universally notorious problem of having insect issues. My dad visits tons of different restuarants all over northeast florida to install dish machines, instruct employees on proper usage of cleaning/insecticide chemicals, and to install dispensers, and he's always found that the asian restuarants have terrible TERRIBLE roosterroach and ant problems in their kitchens.
no doubt this is true for the rest of the US
last time we ate at an asian restuarant our entire family got food poisoning too.

i'd say you'd be taking a bigger risk eating sushi than you would going skydiving

I once ate some bad sushi.
I ended up at the hospital for some days and almost died. I swore to myself that i'd never eat sushi again.
6 years later, I did.
AND IT WAS DELICIOUS

I ate it once and it tastes great in my opinion

Same with me, it felt like my stomach rumbled and I started to feel a little bit nauseous too.
