Author Topic: Define Atheism.  (Read 7533 times)

I saw a video where someone went around asking people on the street if they were athiests.  It got me thinking about whether I was an atheist or not.  So I wrote down some of my thoughts on that.  Enjoy if you want.  If you tend to get upset or highly emotional over things like this please don't bother.  I'm more interested in rational thought than your feelings on the matter.

This thread has run it's course.  I certainly feel much more informed on what an atheist is now. :D

Words have definitions, and asking people to define stuff that has a solidly defined meaning is just annoying. You are an agnostic, or you are otherwise an implicit atheist.

What would I be if I don't believe in the existence of a god but I believe in the hope that believing in a god brings to some people and, as such, would be much happier believing in a religion than not?

Not having a religion.
I am atheist.

"a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings."

Being atheist simply means you do not follow any religion or god.

The real way to go if you do not want a religion is apatheism- basically, not caring and not giving anyone else crap about it.

the definition is in the word itself.

people are stupid

No.

To one person, a gay person might be someone who dresses in pink and rainbow and shouts about his rights as a gay member of society.  To another person, a gay person might be their Uncle who raped them as a child, and has made them keep quiet about it ever since.
Whaat?

Most of what you've written doesn't make any sense or doesn't actually say anything at all. It's like you wanted to sound smart about something and wrote pages of things that could have been summed up by "I dunno maybe there is a god but I do like the lessons the bible/whatever teaches"

"but dah churchez moral code led to dah dark ages and killed honey bunchez of peoplolz"

~Mr. Bradshaw The Atheist

you seem to believe that people tend to generalize all atheists (and gays) as having extremely similar habits and moral codes

What are you even saying here? You're saying you don't know if a god exists (twice), then you're saying.. What exactly?
he's saying he believes in god but then says he doesnt because there is no evidence of god, but he still believes theres god

Being an atheist doesn't mean you aren't religious, it just means you don't believe in a god.

There probably are some religions that can be considered atheistic, Buddhism perhaps.

Or Unitarian-Universalism. It is entirely possible to have a religion without believing in a higher power.

No.

I was just going to say this.

There's gnostic atheists and agnostic atheists.  Big difference between the two.
