Author Topic: Brick menu adjustments for tabbing.  (Read 3257 times)

Title.  Every time I have to tab to other menus, it's annoying that I can't see the tabs that I have selected and stuff.  Can this be fixed or just be implemented with a scroll feature so you can either drag a scrollbar or use your scroll wheel in a certain area to move sideways?

Thank you.

There's a mod that adds two arrows you can use to move the tabs. A scroll bar sounds better though.

I Like the tabbing it's faster then scrolling. I like spending as least amount of time in the brick menu as possible.

there should be two rows of tabs along with the arrows for better choosability without constantly clicking the arrows

Imo I think every tab having a icon instead of text would also be a good idea.

Ya I have so many special bricks I'm thinking of editing some of them so they go in a "Special2" tab

Yes please. I've been wanting this ever since I saw the tab-shifting brick selector add-on. I'm surprised that Badspot hasn't implemented this already. I'd also like to see native brick sorting, i.e. instead of bricks being sorted like this, they should be sorted like this. This should also apply to brick groups, e.g. 3x wide bricks should be between 2x and 4x bricks instead of at the bottom.

Eh, I think that'd be a bad idea. Making icons that properly represent the categories would be impossible, since the variety of bricks they could contain is too big. Like, how would you represent the 'specials' tab? Custom categories wouldn't work either since everyone who wants to use them has to agree on what icon to use.

Bricks: 1x1 brick.
Plates: 1x1F plate.
Rounds: Any of the 1x1 or 1x1F rounds.
Specials: Vehicle spawner, bot hole or pine tree.
Ramps: 1x2 ramp.
Baseplates: Cube.

Add-Ons:
JVS: A door.
Wedge: 1x1F or 1x1 wedge
Zonebricks: Wireframe cube.
Miniempires pack: Minifig or pine tree groups.
Demian's Food bricks: Any of the food.

The Add-Ons are only grouped from what I have. Whatever add-ons there are that were considered that they "deserve" a new category can also receive a representative brick as their icon.

Alright, fair enough, but how would you treat conflicting categories, i.e. two brick packs using the same category, but different icons? The only way to handle that would be to restrict custom categories and require moderator approval for brick packs that add them, which would be a terrible idea.

If anyone decides to do this add-on the way I said it, to begin with, there wouldn't be conflicting categories since each category will have a assigned icon, be it the user has it loaded or not. (Of course the user wouldn't see it if the server does not have it) This wouldn't be a global system so not every single brickpack would comply with making a icon for it. Whoever decides to make it they would need to index the brick packs that have custom categories and work from there, assigning a preset to all pre-existing (default & known) brick packs. Any brickpack that is not indexed could either have a downscaled icon of the first brick from the first category or it's name.

For the case of one category:
The add-on checks if there is any active brickpack that creates/uses a category > Checks if it has a existing icon for it (indexed), if so, display that > If not, use downscaled first brick from first category icon > If tab does not have any bricks with a loaded icon, it would use text instead, be it the full name or the first initial.

That still doesn't answer my question: how does the game prioritize conflicting brick packs? For example, if two brick packs tries to use the non-default category 'Zombie', for example, but uses different icons, how does the game choose which one to use? If two servers use either of the packs exclusively, i.e. pack 1 but not pack 2 and vice versa, the players would see different icons depending on which server they visit which would be confusing as hell.
Also, substituting properly descriptive icons with randomly chosen brick icons is a terrible idea, because 1) the icon is most likely not designed to represent the contents of the entire brick pack, and 2) the icon chosen would be different depending on which brick packs you have loaded. Even worse is the way brick packs with no icons would be handled; in this case, the 'Zombie' tab would either have a single 'Z', which could mean anything from 'Zit' to 'Zebra', or have the entire category name written on it, which would make it wider than all of the tabs that have icons, and that would look awful.
The point is, your system is very poorly designed and causes unneccessary complication for add-on makers and end users alike. It's just not worth what little (subjective) gains there is for the UI design.

Name it 2Special instead and when anyone sees the tab and asks you what it is say "2Special 4You"

Ya, a more organized brick menu would be awesome.

Tab scrolling
correctly sorted bricks
less lag when you pass by large packs of bricks

these things would make building much faster and a little less frustrating

Let's you scale down the icons to have a much better view over which bricks you got and where they are. I couldn't find my bricks without it anymore
