he's probably also thinking of vietnam, although we technically never declared war on north vietnam
also we only got involved because of the communist paranoia surrounding the cold war and the infamous domino theory
its theorized that the conflict in vietnam probably saved the rest of Asia from being a communist stronghold of influence due to other countries like Singapore (and thus build up strength of SEATO) being able to strengthen their own economies without China and SU funneling support into commie revolts there, since all of their supplies were going to Vietnam. Not something that was likely seen at the time, almost seems to be an unintended result.
Some stuffty things did happen in Vietnam, no doubt, and it was escalated to a gross degree. But its not like everything about it was of no benefit.

yeah we do, and every commercial business thinks its a good idea to yell about their sales on a day where dead soldiers are supposed to be mourned
