I almost got Black Dark Pit, too, but I was Sonic on that SSBB Fire Emblem stage. To say the least, it didn't end well for me.

You can fight a character as much as you like until they are unlocked. Just keep doing the requirements until you unlock them.

Though some characters (Jigglypuff, Mr. Game and Watch) are a pain in the ass to unlock after you lost to them.
