Did nobody suggest Neon Genesis Evangelion?
It's a classic, I suggest watching it like this: Original TV Series>End of Evangelion (for the true ending of the series and not the clusterforget that the series finale was)>Rebuild movies.
Fullmetal Alchemist and Kill La Kill are also pretty good.

You have to have an appreciation of the medium the love Evangelion, and the things he's watched and are looking for don't align with what he wants. He'd come in looking for the fights and action which Evangelion simply isn't about. It'd be even worse if he watched the Rebuilds right after, as his entire perception of the series would be instantly forgeted.
