Because it's they are common and you're assuming that role. They aren't prototypes.

but qwepir promised me a super cool prototype plane

Congrats you win the F-20 Tigershark.

Enjoy your prototype aircraft.

or they could defect and keep their aircraft.

Steele and Dax are called into something that looks like an interrogation room. A Huit officer sits on the other side of a transparent divider.

"You two. You are air warriors, yes? There are many places for you to use your skills in our sky fleet, and we would like to ask you to join us. If you survive to finish a tour of duty in this war, you will be given freedom. Then you may return to your homes, or make a new home here, with us. All we request is your assistance in repelling the barbarians of the north, I assure you we will not force you to fight on your home soil. Yet, if you choose to remain loyal to your home, we will honor your decision. You will not be forced into service of the military. You will instead become a sportsman in the Grand Stadium. If you have any questions or requests, please ask."

There has been a change of plans. Command is not organizing a rescue mission.

Time to change the table

I open up the snack bar, walking back over to the table to grab my tablet as I munch on the bar.

Simon gets up.
"Bye."

He walks over to the command room and enters the door. He walks up to the CO and looks at him straight in the eye.
"Sir, when are we going on a rescue mission?"

there will be no rescue mission, we'll just have to keep fighting in the war.

What does the first prototype plane we encountered look like anyways? The one that shot down two guys from Valkyrie.

Not even. If you had been going against that all of you would either be dead or in jail.
You were really just flying against a fifth generation fighter with a fancier airframe and a neat gun.

"Sir, when are we going on a rescue mission?"
The CO glares at you, as if you'd just asked if adding water to someone's ashes will bring them back to life.

"What rescue mission? You mean for the pilots that got shot down over the naval yard? Because there won't be one, not for them. By now, those two have been shipped straight to the Huit mainland, and we aren't going to waste the time and materiel required to pull off a rescue like that just to save two pilots. Who let you in here anyway, get the hell out of my office."

"Sir, what the forget are you talking about? WE CAN'T JUST LEAVE THEM THERE. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THEY DO THERE?"

I glance down the hallway and back at Captain Obrad.

I remain silent. I'm divided. I don't want to die... but I do want to live. This is the only option to live... yet it would dishonor my country and my name...

stuff. These guys seem so honorable in their goddamn "we will honor your decision. You will not be forced into service of the military."

God damn it why did not command save us? Maybe they just wanted us to die here, or they are too petty and scared to save the people they loving conscripted forcefully into their armed forces. I wasn't supposed to die like this... I... I can't.

They aren't going to come save us... why... why not? I am important. Steele is important. Everyone in this facility needs to be freed. Why? Why didn't they try to save us before they flew away? Why?!
