apparently it's of extreme importance that cultures remain exclusive to their respective people or w/e you want to call it

the actual definition of "appropriation" is "the action of taking something for one's own use, typically without the owner's permission" if that tells you anything about the intended connotation of the term "cultural appropriation"

basically the natural sociological process of cultural diffusion is, in fact, stealing, as culture is "owned" by the society it is associated with and anyone outside of that society attempting to indulge in that culture is doing so without the consent of the society and therefore it is immoral

if that doesn't make sense you're probably a more rational person

well a common argument is that white people don't actually have any culture of their own (which appears to indicate a kind of american ethnocentrism in the offender honestly)

which is stupid dumb for a lot of reasons, including:
a) assuming "white people" constitutes a coherent society
  1) from this we can infer that other races would be considered in the same regard, and so there is "black culture" and "asian culture" and the sort when there actually exists a large variety of distinct societies and cultures within each of those qualifications
b) often times used in a way which insinuates the idea that white people have "stolen" all the culture they claim
   2) still works on the assumption that cultural appropriation makes sense
   3) legitimately false
etc etc i can't be bothered to preach to the choir
