Author Topic: I 'came out' as an atheist.  (Read 25168 times)

why do people feel the need to 'come out' with their religious or loveual views?

my family is religious, but I never felt the need to tell them I felt otherwise. i think leaving it alone is best, unless you are in a situation where you feel you must address it. (i.e. forced church, but even then...think of it as family time?) anyways it will just distress them, so you better be sure it's worth it.

what's the point in that post?

making this thread r/athiesm in a nutshell?

not all religious people think a majority of atheists are starfishs, its really just to attack that stereotypical minority of religious people who actually do think all atheists are delinquent losers

and Edison is a copyright hoarding starfish

people treat it like it's a way of life, and do what op's mom is doing
that's bad
I don't think it's bad when you choose to live your life like that willingly.  I feel that it is uplifting and nearly pain-free.

le superior atheist masterrace

but even then...think of it as family time?
Sitting quitly in a room and listening to some dude I don't/barely know tell the same story I've heard 20+ times isn't "family time" to me
Family time would be when my family actually gets to talk with each other

Well religion is something completely different (op probably only used the phrase "came out" for lack of a better term) but with loveuality, for example, it's kind of impossible to convince people that the guy you're living together with in a one bedroom apartment/house with only one bed is "just a friend"
Even in general, being secretive about it means you have to introduce the person as just a friend (which some people don't like being on the receiving end of at all), being very secretive and quite of everything, probably won't be able to involve them in as many family matters, etc
And some people just don't like keeping secrets from their family

Comments like these are why religion is such a hotbed topic.

From how OP describes his mother's opinions of atheists/agnostics, she views them as scum. Show her that image. Johnny Depp? Albert Einstein? Alexander G. Bell? Yup, all scum of the Earth. Terrible people. The point of the post was to give OP some ammunition to defend himself.

yeah op now would be a good time to lock this

Einstein never credited Poincare as a source in his relativity theory

Good person? Maybe if technical plagiarism doesn't make you bad, then yes.

man that picture needs some like, research

Albert Einstein was a deist. Therefore he falls under the 'Agnostic Deist' category.

We're good at reading too.
