Author Topic: I 'came out' as an atheist.  (Read 25163 times)

It, er, could've gone better.

A bit of backstory:
My family is divorced, my mother being a christian and my father being agnostic/atheist (not sure which). They seperated when I was ~three years old. When that happened, my dad filed some paperwork causing me to not be raised in the church.

Okay, back to today. I casually said it, and then she freaked out. She asked me where I learned that Christianity was not the only religion in the world (what?). Then, she proclaimed that my school was an 'atheist cult' that 'brainwashed me', even though I've been an atheist for as long as I can remember. My mother was then speachless that the school taught the ideas of evolution in school. Another claim she made was that all atheists are homeless druggies on the streets. Before I could exactly give a rebuttal she said that I was simply mad at god and it was just a 'stage'.

Sorry if this sounds stupid on paper, but does anyone have any advice?
I honestly don't know what is going to happen, I mean worst thing is that I get disowned, but I doubt it. I think she might attempt to pull me out of school and into a religious one, but hopefully my Dad can file some paperwork stopping her.

your mom is a bad mom

leave before it gets abusive

inb4 stick it in her pooper

These kind of Christians are the worst kind. :/

say it's against your religious beliefs

Tell her that God doesn't like uninformed people

leave before it gets abusive
He's 11 according to his profile though

that all atheists are homeless druggies on the streets

This just pisses me off.

Just ignore her, she'll get over it eventually so long as you don't shove it in her face when she provokes you. All you ever need to say is that it's just what you believe and leave it at that.

Ask your dad if you can stay with him for like a week

tell your dad about it too

I don't think the problem is that she's Christian.

She's just being judgemental and being a
bad mom
here, and frankly is representing the true point of Christianity.  If she was a good mom and Christian lady, she would support you and still wish you well regardless of your beliefs.

I am sorry for her miscongenialities.

Your mother was most likely molested as a child.

Your mom is the type of person I'd like to punch.

I'd like to punch all moms.
